The KZN North Coast: A Local's Guide to Every Town from Zimbali to Zinkwazi

The KZN North Coast is the stretch of KwaZulu-Natal coastline north of Durban. When locals say it, they usually mean the part from Zimbali and Ballito up to Zinkwazi, with Umhlali and KwaDukuza just inland. You will also hear it called the Dolphin Coast. This is our guide to all of it: every town, what each is good for, and where to go next.

The whole stretch falls under KwaDukuza Municipality, not Durban. King Shaka International Airport is just to the south, about 20 to 30 minutes from Zimbali, Ballito and Salt Rock, and 40 to 50 from Zinkwazi.

The coast changes as you go north. Most of the newer building, the estates, the malls and the schools, lies between Zimbali and Sheffield Beach. Beyond the uMhlali River the villages get smaller and further apart, and Zinkwazi, at the top, had fewer than 700 residents at the 2011 census. Inland, Umhlali and KwaDukuza are far older than any of the beach towns.

The towns, south to north

Zimbali

A forested, gated estate with two hotels and a Tom Weiskopf golf course that takes visitors. Next door, Zimbali Lakes has opened an Ernie Els course and a public clubhouse. You need a gate code to get into the original estate. Read the Zimbali guide.

Ballito

The main town, and where most of the restaurants, shops and holiday flats are. Willard Beach holds Blue Flag status for 2026/27, and the mall, the Lifestyle Centre and the hospital are all here. Start with things to do in Ballito, the beach guide and where to eat.

Shaka's Rock

Mostly residential, and home to the two best-known tidal pools on the coast: Thompson's Bay, with its Hole in the Wall, and the Chaka's Rock pool for snorkelling. Read the Shaka's Rock guide.

Salt Rock

An old beachfront village around a hotel from the 1930s, with newer shopping centres and estates inland. A Blue Flag main beach, a tidal pool in front of the hotel, and a longer restaurant list than you would expect. Read the Salt Rock guide.

Sheffield Beach

Where it goes quiet. Rock pools, snorkelling, dog walkers and Christmas Bay at the northern end. There are no lifeguards and no shops on the beach. Read the Sheffield Beach guide.

Umhlali

The old sugar village inland of Salt Rock, settled around 1850. Come for Burnedale Farm, the Ballito Farmers Market on weekends and golf at Umhlali Country Club. Read the Umhlali guide.

Tinley Manor

A small beach village on the north bank of the uMhlali River mouth. Club Med opened its resort here in July 2026, and its beach now carries Blue Flag status. The resort is for staying guests only. The village's own main beach is a Blue Flag pilot site.

Zinkwazi

The quiet end: a long beach, a lagoon to paddle, a lodge, a hotel and holiday houses. Read the Zinkwazi guide.

KwaDukuza

The inland town once called Stanger, and the seat of the municipality. King Shaka's memorial is here, and the Luthuli Museum is at Groutville, a few minutes away.

What to do

Tidal pools, more than 375 kilometres of trails, four golf courses that take visitors, a wildlife sanctuary and a free museum. We have put them in one list: 27 things to do on the KZN North Coast.

For this month's events, see what's on in Ballito and the North Coast.

Where to eat

From beachfront Italian in Ballito to handmade pasta on a farm in Umhlali. See the best restaurants on the KZN North Coast, town by town.

Living here

The North Coast has grown fast for more than a decade. If you have just moved here, or are thinking about it, these are for you:

Good to know

  • Blue Flag beaches for 2026/27: Willard Beach, Thompson's Bay, Salt Rock Main Beach and the Club Med beach at Tinley Manor.
  • Swim where there are lifeguards. The municipality staffs seven: Zinkwazi Main, Blythedale Main, Tinley Manor Main, Salt Rock Main, Thompson's Bay, Willard and Clarke Bay. Out of season, cover is reduced.
  • The N2 to Durban and the airport is tolled. The M4 coastal road is the free alternative. A second plaza, Mvoti, sits on the N2 north of Ballito.
  • December is busy. Book restaurants and arrive early for beach parking.

The people who make it

A place is its people. Every week we celebrate one of them in Local Legends. Tell us who it should be.
