Schools on the KZN North Coast: A Parent's Guide to Ballito, Salt Rock and Umhlali
by I Love Ballito Writer · · 5 min read
Schools are usually the first question a family asks before moving to the KZN North Coast. The short answer: there are three independent schools that take a child from pre-primary to matric, a fourth opening in January 2027, two smaller independent schools, and a long-established government primary school at Umhlali. This guide sets out what each one offers, in the schools' own words. We have left fees out, because they change every year. Ask each school directly.

Independent schools, pre-primary to matric
Ashton International College Ballito
Ashton opened in Ballito in January 2010 and runs from early learning to matric on one campus. Its early learning section, Ashlings, takes children from Grade 0000, the year they turn three. The high school is called the Senior College and names its years Form 1 to Form 5.
What sets it apart is the choice of two matric routes. Form 1 blends both, and from Form 2 pupils who meet the standard choose between Cambridge (IGCSE, then AS and A Levels) and the IEB National Senior Certificate. The school describes itself as value-driven, with a Christian ethos.
Reddam House Ballito
Reddam House opened its Ballito campus in 2019. It has an Early Learning School for ages one to six, a Preparatory School and a College, through to Grade 12. It is co-educational and non-denominational, and writes the IEB matric.
The school lists an Olympic-sized water polo pool and a 500-seat theatre among its facilities, and it has been building more classrooms to keep up with demand. Do not confuse it with Reddam House Umhlanga, which is a separate school further south.
Curro Salt Rock
Curro Salt Rock opened in January 2014 as Curro Mount Richmore, and you will still see the old name in places. It is the same school. It runs as three parts on one site:
- Preschool. From three months to five years.
- Primary school. Grade R to Grade 7, following CAPS in English and Afrikaans, with isiZulu as a subject and robotics.
- High school. Grade 8 to Grade 12, following CAPS and writing the IEB matric exam.
Classes are capped at about 25. It is a day school, with aftercare for the younger grades, and it runs school transport along the coast from Westbrook to Blythedale.

Smaller independent schools
Destiny Life Academy
An independent Christian high school in Umhlali, taking Grade 8 to Grade 12 on the CAPS curriculum. It sets out to make a route to matric affordable.
Game Changers Primary School
An independent primary school run by the Soul Action non-profit, taking Grade 1 to Grade 7 on a blend of CAPS and Cambridge, with fees on a sliding scale. It has been based at Sugar Rush Park since January 2025 and plans to move to its own site in Ballito.
Government school
Umhlali Preparatory School
Umhlali Prep has been teaching since 1918, which makes it the oldest of the schools in this guide. It is a public school taking Grade R to Grade 7, and it is large: four Grade R classes and five or six classes in every grade after that. Its stated aim is affordable preparatory education.
We could not find a government school in Ballito itself. There are other public schools inland, around Shakaskraal and Foxhill. The KZN Department of Education's school register is the place to check them.
Opening in January 2027: Seaton House
Seaton House is a new independent school being built in the Seaton Commercial Precinct, just north of Salt Rock, between the Seaton and Lalela estates. It is co-educational, not-for-profit, has a Christian foundation and will write the IEB matric. Its plan is for mixed classes in the early years, separate classes for boys and girls in Grades 8 and 9, and mixed classes again from Grade 10.
- It opens in January 2027, starting from Grade 0000, with Grade 8 as its first high school year. In time it will run to Grade 12.
- Exactly which primary grades open in the first year has changed as plans developed, so confirm with the school.
- Classes are capped at 20 in the primary school and 25 in the high school.
- The campus is 25 hectares, 12 of them protected wetland.
- Boarding is planned for the high school in a later phase.
- The founding headmaster is Tony Shuttleworth, who spent 28 years at Hilton College.
By February 2026 more than 550 families had registered interest, which tells you how tight school places on the North Coast have become.
Nearby, outside the area
Crawford International North Coast is at Westbrook, on the Tongaat side of the toll plaza. It runs from pre-primary to Grade 12 and offers boarding from Grade 6.
Tuition and homeschooling
Ballito Academy, at Sanhall Office Park, is a tuition and homeschool support centre, not a conventional school. It supports full-time homeschoolers on the Impaq curriculum and offers extra lessons and Cambridge exam support.
Good to know
- Drive the school run before you choose. The schools are spread from Ballito to Umhlali, and the Salt Rock Road junction with the N2 backs up at peak hours.
- Apply early. Demand has outrun supply for years, and waiting lists are normal.
- Trinityhouse Palm Lakes has closed. Some estate agent pages still list it. Its last section shut at the end of 2020.
- Curro Mount Richmore and Curro Salt Rock are one school.
- Ask about the matric route. IEB, CAPS and Cambridge lead to different exams, and Ashton is the only school here with a Cambridge route to matric level.
