Shaka's Rock and Thompson's Bay: Tidal Pools, the Hole in the Wall and the Legend
by I Love Ballito Writer · · 3 min read
Shaka's Rock sits between Ballito and Salt Rock on Ocean Drive, and it holds two of the best-known swimming spots on the KZN North Coast: the Thompson's Bay tidal pool, with its Hole in the Wall, and the Chaka's Rock tidal pool. They suit different days. Thompson's is the big one, with lifeguards in season, for swimming and families. The Chaka's Rock pool is the one for a mask and snorkel. You will see the village's name spelled both ways, and both are in use.
Thompson's Bay
A sheltered bay with rocky headlands on either side and a large tidal pool. It holds full Blue Flag status for the 2026/27 season. There are ablutions, and lifeguards on duty in season.
No fishing is allowed in the tidal area, and nothing may be taken from the pools.
The Hole in the Wall
Just past the tidal pool, on the southern side, a hole through the rocks leads to a few small, usually empty beaches. Go at low tide only. At a very high tide the waves through the gap are dangerous, and an incoming tide can cut you off on the far side.
Take the sea seriously here
Thompson's is pretty, and it is not always gentle. In January 2026 a swimmer was lost to rip currents here, early in the morning. Swim only when lifeguards are on the beach, in the tidal pool or between their flags, and check the tide table before you go through the Hole in the Wall.
Chaka's Rock tidal pool
The second pool, on the Shaka's Rock beach, is the one for snorkelling. The marine life is protected, so look and leave it. The shallow end suits children. The beach beside it is also a ski-boat launch.
We could not confirm lifeguard cover at this pool, so treat it as unguarded.
Snorkelling with a guide
Tidal Tao runs guided snorkelling safaris in the pools along this stretch of coast, including night snorkels and rocky shore walks. It is the easiest way to see what lives in the pools without standing on it.
If you go on your own, do not put your feet down. There are urchins, stonefish and scorpionfish on the bottom.
The legend behind the name
High Rock, north of Thompson's Bay, is usually pointed to as the rock in question. Legend has it that King Shaka's warriors proved their courage by leaping from it into the sea, and that his enemies were thrown from it. Another version says it was a royal lookout. None of this is documented, and all of it is still told.
Where to eat
Sala Beach House, on Ocean Drive at Thompson's Bay, is a boutique hotel with a restaurant and a spa. The restaurant takes bookings from non-guests for lunch and dinner, on set menus and with a deposit. It is reservations only, so do not expect to walk in for a drink.
Salt Cafe, on Ocean Drive opposite the beach, is the local stop for coffee and breakfast. Shaka's Rock is mostly residential, so for a wider choice go five minutes either way. See where to eat in Ballito and our Salt Rock guide.
Good to know
- Low tide is the time for both pools and for the Hole in the Wall.
- Arrive early on weekends and in season. Parking fills up, and in holiday season it is paid, in cash.
- Alcohol and open fires are not allowed on KwaDukuza beaches.
