Things to Do on the KZN North Coast: 27 Ideas from Ballito to the Tugela

The KZN North Coast runs from Ballito up to the Tugela River, and inland to KwaDukuza. Here are 27 things to do on the North Coast. We checked each one in October 2026 against its own website or a dated report, not by visiting, so confirm prices and hours before you drive. Two are annual events.

Pick by the kind of day

  • Just turn up: the beaches and tidal pools (1 to 7), Sugar Rush Park (15), Flag Animal Farm (16), Burnedale Farm (17), the Luthuli Museum (23) and the Ballito Farmers Market on a weekend (25).
  • Book first: snorkelling with Tidal Tao (8), a microlight flight (10), Rain Farm Game Lodge (13), Mindgame Escape (18) and the four golf courses (19 to 22).
  • With small children: the tidal pools at Thompson's Bay and Salt Rock (2 and 3), Sugar Rush Park (15), Flag Animal Farm (16) and Burnedale Farm (17).
  • A rainy day: Mindgame Escape (18) and the Luthuli Museum (23).
  • Something more active: Holla Trails (11), a microlight flight (10) and snorkelling at the Chaka's Rock pool (5).
  • A quiet morning: Sheffield Beach (4), Zinkwazi (7) and Harold Johnson Nature Reserve (14).

Beaches and tidal pools

  1. Willard Beach, Ballito. The main beach, with full Blue Flag status for 2026/27. See our Ballito beach guide.
  2. Thompson's Bay and the Hole in the Wall. A Blue Flag beach with a large tidal pool, and a rock gap you walk through at low tide only, before the sea cuts you off. See our Shaka's Rock guide.
  3. Salt Rock Main Beach and tidal pool. A Blue Flag beach and a tidal pool in front of the Salt Rock Hotel. See our Salt Rock guide.
  4. Sheffield Beach and Christmas Bay. Rock pools and quiet sand, with no lifeguards. See our Sheffield Beach guide.
  5. The Chaka's Rock tidal pool. The pool at Shaka's Rock that people snorkel in. Look, and leave the sea life where it is.
  6. Tinley Manor Main Beach. A Blue Flag pilot beach for 2026/27, beside the new Club Med.
  7. Zinkwazi beach and lagoon. A long beach and a lagoon to paddle. Lifeguards cover the main sea beach only, not the lagoon. See our Zinkwazi guide.

In the water and in the air

  1. Snorkel with Tidal Tao. Guided snorkelling safaris in the tidal pools around Salt Rock and Ballito, including night snorkels.
  2. Watch for whales and dolphins. Dolphins pass all year. Humpback whales move along this coast in winter and spring, and you can see them from the shore.
  3. Take a microlight flight. Ballito Microlight flies trips of 30 to 90 minutes. The longer routes run north towards the Tugela mouth.

Trails and wildlife

  1. Holla Trails. More than 375 kilometres of mountain bike, trail running and walking routes, starting at Sugar Rush Park on Esenembe Road. You need a permit.
  2. The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary. Known to many as Monkeyland KZN. Take N2 exit 222 for Tinley Manor and Shakaskraal and head inland for about 16 kilometres. Entry in 2026 is R440 for adults and R220 for children aged 3 to 12, and it is going cashless.
  3. Rain Farm Game Lodge. Giraffe, impala and wildebeest on guided game drives off Esenembe Road. Day visits are by booking only.
  4. Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. On the south bank of the Tugela, with walking trails, a picnic site over the river and the remains of Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree, from the Anglo-Zulu War. Check gate times with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

With children

  1. Sugar Rush Park. An electric train, a high ropes course, putt-putt, pedal carts, The Jump Barn and a snake park in one place on Esenembe Road. Closed on Mondays outside school and public holidays.
  2. Flag Animal Farm. Animal shows through the day, pony and tractor rides and a water park on weekends, on Sheffield Beach Road.
  3. Burnedale Farm. A small animal farm, pottery, candle making and good food in Umhlali. See our Umhlali guide.
  4. Mindgame Escape. Three escape rooms at Tiffany's Shopping Centre in Salt Rock, for a rainy day.

Golf

  1. Zimbali Country Club. Tom Weiskopf's course through hills and coastal forest. Visitors pay R1,300 for 18 holes in 2026, plus R540 for a cart. See our Zimbali guide.
  2. Zimbali Lakes. The Ernie Els Signature Course, with a public clubhouse and the Big Easy Winebar and Grill. The course is closed on Mondays.
  3. Umhlali Country Club. Founded in 1961, with a Peter Matkovich course and visitors welcome.
  4. Prince's Grant. A Peter Matkovich course north of KwaDukuza. The estate is cashless.

History

  1. Luthuli Museum, Groutville. The home of Chief Albert Luthuli, Nobel Peace Prize winner. Entry is free. Open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 to 16:00, and Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 15:00. Closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 January.
  2. King Shaka Memorial, KwaDukuza. The memorial stone raised in 1932 over the king's grave, with a visitor centre on the site that charges a small entry fee.

Markets and events

  1. Ballito Farmers Market. Saturdays and Sundays from 08:00 to 14:00 on the R102 near Umhlali, with more than 150 traders. Free entry.
  2. The Ballito Pro. The surfing festival at Willard Beach. The 2026 event ran in July and was billed as its 57th edition.
  3. The Litchi Picking Festival. Pick your own from mid December until the fruit runs out. Check the festival's own site for the venue.

Good to know

  • Alcohol and open fires are not allowed on KwaDukuza beaches.
  • Swim where lifeguards are on duty. Several of the quieter beaches have none.
  • Several venues are cashless. Carry a card.
