I am not of Italian heritage, that I can promise you, so a standard pizza or pasta is not at all tempting to me. However, one Friday evening after a movie at Gateway, the family and I discovered Col’Caccahio – and I have loved their food ever since! With a family of five, plus three add on’s, it’s very rare that a restaurant manages to cover our entire’s group’s food needs. But Col’Cacchio did it perfectly!
When Col’Cacchio extended their franchise by opening a restaurant in Ballito, I was over the moon, and we have already visited there a few times! We were invited to write about the new branch, conveniently situated at The Zimbali Wedge, where patrons enjoy ample parking, a lovely sized venue with indoor and outdoor options, family sized booths and quiet corners for two – it truly does cover everyone easily. Even our adult kids loved the outdoor swings! Ok back to the experience! Ivan and Sam looked after us on the night we were there, and after asking Ivan what was good on the menu, his immediate reply was simple: EVERYTHING. And they were not wrong at all!!!
We ordered pizzas – carb clever and the standard – lamb shanks, fillet steak, gnocchi etc. and all were seriously perfection, with generous portions too! Just reading the menu makes you want to try everything. We enjoyed a fillet steak, medium rare as per the chef’s order, served with a black peppercorn truffle-infused sauce, slow-cooked pulled beef short rib, served with Italian- style hard cheese with your choice of pasta (we chose gnocchi OMGee good), nacho libre pizza, jerk-spiced chicken, sour cream, homemade guacamole, tomato chilli salsa and coriander – the low carb option is JUST as good, with a cauliflower pizza base, psyllium husks, flax seeds and dusted with coconut flour (and this pizza is served with a side salad) – we enjoyed all the flavours with none of the guilt or bloating! My lamb shank was melt-in-your-mouth perfection after being cooked in the pizza oven with fresh tomato peppers and herbs. All mains are served with your choice of steamed broccoli, mashed potato, roasted sweet potato, roasted sesame carrots, grilled baby marrow or a side salad.
Funnily enough, we had all scouted the dessert menu before our mains, so we went for a walk and enjoyed some time on the swings, but the night was far from over as dessert was a MUST-HAVE. And boy oh boy, we were not disappointed at all!
The citrus pancake with fresh orange segments, orange sauce and vanilla cream is my new firm favourite dessert – along with the delightful melt-in-your-mouth white and milk chocolate panna cotta, Sherbert AND then the Meringa – crushed meringue, berries, cream and berry coulis. I think I found my new favourite dessert and coffee spot too.
Great service, great food, really nice venue, varied menu, Col’Caccachio ticks all the boxes – of course for sure, we will be back, over and over again.
