Ever wondered what would be the best way to kick off your weekend in Ballito? For some, sleeping in late and binge-watching series on a Saturday morning with the rest of the family is all there is to look forward to. For others, however, it means getting up early to go to the weekly local Parkrun. This past weekend I was fortunate enough to get my body out of bed early enough to join in on the fun!
The idea behind Parkrun is pretty simple… Turn up at your local run; run or walk 5km and just enjoy it! The reason I say ‘local run’ is because this is an international initiative, meaning that these 5km runs happen every Saturday at 8:00, all around the world!
I set off on my run with more than a 100 other people from all ages and even some four-legged children, not really knowing what I was getting myself into since I hadn’t done it in more than a year. But, as always, it never fails to be absolutely breath-taking! The run starts at Sugar Rush Park and goes through the majestic sugar cane fields and open landscapes in the surrounding area. Parts of the run also go through the ruins and forest adjacent to the park, making it a wonderland for children’s imaginations. The run ends back at Sugar Rush Park, where you can enjoy a breakfast or cup of coffee at the restaurant, or even stay active and take the kiddies to the Jump Park.
Not only does the run provide you with the opportunity to experience Mother Nature at her finest while burning some calories, but since it is volunteer-run, it is absolutely free for anyone! The Parkrun has a great mix of professional and amateur runners, walkers, children and even dogs. There are no age- or experience requirements in order to take part “ you can just come as you are and do it at your own pace.
Registering is also simple and you only have to register once and you’re free to run any Parkrun, at any time, anywhere in the world, with that single once-off registration. So whether you just want to get out of the house or you’re very serious about fitness, it is definitely an experience I wouldn’t recommend missing!
