I get it… You’ve probably been working ridiculously hard and yes, you earned yourself the right to put your feet up in a permanent position for the long weekend. Or You could challenge yourself to a weekend of firsts in your hometown like I did and make it one to remember! If I were saying this standing right in front of you, I’d probably have to duck as couch pillows or leftover pizza came flying at my head but never fear. I have the protection of a blog post to get my point across…

As you might have guessed, I can’t remain in one place for very long. My adventures as a travel blogger keep me rather busy and I’ve got this idea of continuously exploring every inch of our beautiful planet. This urge doesn’t stop when I’m back home in Ballito and if you’re thinking my weekend of firsts involved a new type of shooter or a trendy restaurant, then I apologise right now ‘cos that wasn’t the vibe this time around! I wanted to seize every moment, challenge myself and do things out of the ordinary whilst at the same time exploring familiar territories and keeping my excursions relatively close to the local area. So if you’re feeling inspired already, then read on to find out what my weekend of firsts entailed…

I went in a microlight… and didn’t vomit. This is probably quite ironic as I have a deathly fear of flying, which may come as a bit of a surprise seeing as I spend so much time up in the air. I have NO idea why the mere thought of it skyrockets my anxiety but I couldn’t have been in better hands than the wonderful Ron van Breda (of ComeFly Microlight and Pilot Centre) who took me along our beautiful coastline all the way up to Prince’s Grant. It was incredible and after the butterflies (they felt like fish eagles!) subsided, I couldn’t help but feel elated being in a small contraption up in the sky. It’s the most exhilarating feeling and I would recommend it to everyone, even if only for the breathtaking aerial views of our majestic North Coast.

I finally went to the Shongweni Market. Never in my 28 years have I gotten up at 5:15am to make it to the Shongweni market before the crowds come in! By the time 10am rolled in it was far too busy, so I’m happy with my puffy-eyed decision to get up SUPER early. For those that haven’t been, GO. Although not officially a local attraction, I feel this is something really worth the short trip to experience. There is fresh produce, one of a kind decor pieces, jewelry, clothing, the yummiest food and even the SPCA book sale.

{Editor’s note – If you’re keen for a similar kind of experience in Ballito, we have a few markets that might just tickle your fancy…}

  • Foodies’ Market at the Lifestyle Centre – First Saturday of every month from 8am – 1pm.
  • The Litchi Orchard Farmers’ Market – Second Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm.
  • The Litchi Orchard Night Market – Last Friday evening of every month from 5pm.

I didn’t cheat once! In the past, long weekends usually meant pizza, chocolate and all the other goodies (baddies?) that make our mouths water. This time around, I got my weekend’s worth of fresh juices from The Juice Kitchen at The Lifestyle Centre, vegetarian meals from Health @ Tiffany’s and I sipped on lemon water from noon ’til night! I’m currently writing this on Tuesday morning back at work’ and I actually feel well rested and rejuvenated after a long-weekend of healthy living, exercise and adventure a definite first and it feels GREAT!

As I reflect on my weekend of firsts, I have come to realise that finding adventure can often be a mental journey. It may require you to step out of your comfort zone, attempt the things you never thought you would, and be willing to see even the most familiar things in a new way which is easy to do when you live somewhere as vibrant and multi-faceted as our home-town!

What did you get up to this long weekend that you think I should try?  I’d love to hear from you so please let me know in the comments below!

Love from,

Lamb xx
